China Study Abroad Academics
Experience Asbury in China!
Asbury University successfully launched its China Study Abroad program in the Fall of 2013. Asbury’s China program provides a full, 13-18 credit hour semester of a liberal arts education, focusing on modern and contemporary history and culture, with emphasis on global contributions stemming from China.
The program will stay in Xi’an (7 weeks) and Beijing (4 weeks), Qinghai (1 week), Hong Kong (1 week), and Thailand (1 week) for a total of 14 weeks (August through November) under the supervision of Asbury faculty. Along with intensive language study and in-depth guided cultural studies and experiences, students will have the opportunity to take advantage of service opportunities with orphanages and minority groups.
Applicants do not need to come to China with prior Chinese language fluency but are required to take Chinese language courses for university credit while in China.
The program will be especially attractive to students of modern ancient history; Chinese and ancient languages; communications and media; and international communication and business. All students, regardless of major, benefit from competencies acquired by the challenges of living and studying abroad in both rural communities and major international cosmopolitan centers while obtaining a semester of liberal arts credit.
Asbury’s Semester in China offers:
- At the same cost of a regular semester on Asbury campus plus travel and personal spending
- Asbury faculty-led program with the guidance and mentorship by our own faculty
- An opportunity to live in community with other Asbury students, offering the security and benefits similar to Asbury’s campus
- A full semester of liberal arts credit
- An international experience in both rural communities and cosmopolitan centers in the heart of Asia
Note: Prior Chinese language is NOT required to spend a semester with Asbury University in China.
Courses will regularly incorporate site visits. China’s history is ancient and well preserved, so regular trips to places such as the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Great Wall, and other important cultural centers will be a regular part of the educational experience in the China Study Abroad program.
Students will benefit from the unique opportunity of living abroad in a program designed to support Asbury University’s mission of equipping men and women for lives of learning, leadership, and service.
For the added cost of what most students spend for a 1-2 week abroad for missions, travel courses, or vacations ($3000), students accepted into Asbury’s China Study Abroad program spend an entire semester overseas.
This program is open to both Asbury traditional undergraduate students as well as qualifying students from any other accredited college or university in the U.S. Students must be a full-time student with a minimum GPA of 2.75 and have completed at least two semesters of academic work.
