Dennis F. Kinlaw Study Center

The Kinlaw Study Center is located on the lower level of Kinlaw Library. Open from 1-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, we offer students a unique research-conducting environment. Surrounded by paintings and plaques that reflect the heritage of Asbury, students are invited to browse a complete collection of yearbooks from 1915 to the present, back issues and historical copies of The Collegian, books published by previous presidents and professors, and other interesting artifacts.

Among the interesting items on display in the Kinlaw Study Center is a two-volume set of Johnson’s Dictionary.

The Samuel Johnson Dictionary

When first published in 1755, A Dictionary of the English Language was the first comprehensive listing of English words with their definitions and quotations illustrating their use. Samuel Johnson originally planned to finish the work in three years, but the project was involved and took nine years instead.

Sample entry: Eavesdropper. n.s. [eaves and drop.] A listener under windows; an insidious listener

Retired Asbury professor Dr. McKinley chose “Horse” as his favorite Johnson definition.

Horse. n.s. [Saxon] A neighing quadruped, used in war, and draught and carriage.
