Asbury University’s Dean of the School of Education, Dr. Verna Lowe, will speak via Webcast — on Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. — on new Common Core Standards and how teacher preparation programs can equip their candidates.
The Common Core State Standards Initiative is an effort coordinated by the Council for Chief State School Officers to establish consistent, high goals for student learning across the United States. Currently, each state creates its own standards for education.
“As Asbury has carefully considered how to train educators to meet the educational needs of children, we’ve learned a lot about the knowledge and skills children need to be successful in higher education and the workforce,” Lowe said. “I’m eager to share the discoveries we’ve made and the research that has influenced how we equip teachers to make a difference.”
Also presenting with Lowe is Dr. Janice Poda, Strategic Initiative Director of the Education Workforce for the Council of Chief State School Officers. She was previously the Deputy State Superintendent of Education for Administration and Chief of Staff of the South Carolina Department of Education.
The Webcast is hosted by Taskstream, a company that provides Web-based software and support services in the education field. To register, visit Taskstream.com.
