PRESS RELEASE:

“Holiness Emphasis Week Kicks Off at Asbury”

January 25, 2016

WILMORE, Ky. — Rev. David Ward has an encouraging message for Asbury University: holiness and happiness go together.

Dean of Theology and Interdisciplinary Studies at Indiana Wesleyan University, Ward is this year’s speaker for Holiness Emphasis Week — a keystone of spiritual life at Asbury that provides a yearly opportunity for preaching, prayer and reflection on the concept of holiness.

Both in Chapel messages and in evening services — Monday through Thursday at 7 p.m. — Ward will lead the Asbury community through an exploration of this year’s theme, “Called to be Happy; Called to Be Holy.”

“Holiness is the way of life that God tells us will make us happy in the end,” Ward said. “God doesn’t make up arbitrary rules for us to follow — he gives us the way to be deeply, enduringly, eternally happy.”

In Monday’s Chapel, Ward lead listeners through Galatians 3, examining the relationship of law, grace and personal holiness.

“If you let duty drive you, not love, and joy and delight in God, you will never be holy,” Ward said. “Holiness is not our duty; it’s our delight.”

Sophomore Mia Wiersema ’18 appreciated Ward’s emphasis on holiness as the result of grace. “I really liked his illustration about how holiness isn’t climbing upwards; it’s recognizing our weakness,” Wiersema said. “When I start to think I’m doing well, I have to stop and realize that I’m not doing anything — it’s God working through me.”
