In its in-seat mode, this course is a combination of lecture/discussion (analogous to other humanities courses, or courses that are read/respond in nature).
Translation to Discovery/remote teaching
- Students complete readings in advance of class
- Discussion Forums on Discovery for reading responses. (The main advantage of this is not clogging one’s inbox, and everything is already sorted for the instructor—one Discussion Topic for each response).
- Written “mini-lectures” or short (10-minute max) videos recorded using Panopto.
- Synchronous sessions: use the native Discovery “Chat” feature for live office hours or help sessions, or schedule live Zoom sessions for content delivery and discussion.
- Testing occurs on Discovery, via a proctored objective quiz and an essay assignment that is submitted separately

Simplicity and consistency in Discovery is my goal so students can focus on the curriculum and objectives rather than navigation.
Translation to Discovery/remote teaching
- Weekly Zoom meetings for all classes for class discussion topics
- One-on-one verbal feedback on assignments
- Q&A and announcements
- Assignments and regular auto-graded quizzes through Discovery
- Flipped classroom and pre-recorded lectures
