Job Title: Director of Library Services

Reports to: Provost

FLSA Classification: Exempt

Job Purpose:

The Director of Library Services provides innovative leadership for library services, programs, and resources management (materials, facilities, budgets, and personnel) in support of student learning, academic programs, and faculty teaching and research. An important part of the position is supporting the mission of the University and advancing the academic excellence and spiritual vitality of our university and students. Each employee plays an important role in the development of the Christian faith in our students.

Nature of Duties:

  • Leadership
    • Provide dynamic, forward-thinking leadership for the library staff that leads to a shared vision and enables them to achieve the library’s mission in the context of the university’s mission while taking the library to the next level of excellence.
    • Build a strong team concept in the library by hiring and retaining a highly qualified staff, by providing clear performance goals and consistent performance evaluations, by mentoring staff, and by promoting professional development opportunities.
    • Oversee all aspects of library services including collection development, cataloging and processing, circulation, electronic resources, reference and instruction, archives and special collections, and associated services that support the mission of the library.
  • Planning
    • Be a strong and articulate advocate for the library programs and staff and persuasively represent the library to the administration, faculty, students, external clientele, and the broader educational community.
    • Manage the budget and aggressively pursue additional funding from external resources through gifts and grants.
    • Provide creative planning and supervision for the use and maintenance of library facilities and equipment.
    • Prepare an annual report for the library that documents library services and provides specific goals for improving the library which are consistent with resources and the overall strategic plan for the library.
  • Electronic Resources
    • Supervise and manage automated library systems including the integrated library system and the library web page.
    • Develop electronic resources, information storage and retrieval systems, and design procedures for collecting, organizing, interpreting, and classifying information.
    • Provide technical expertise, support, and training for library automation planning and development, in cooperation with Information Technology Services.
    • Serves as a collection development liaison to at least one of the university’s schools providing recommendations for purchases and resources.
    • Participates as an active member of the Asbury University faculty, such as, attendance at monthly faculty meeting.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library and/or Information Science.

Experience and Training:

  • Evidence of a committed and dynamic Christian faith along with the ability to support the University’s theological position, lifestyle standards, and mission.
  • Overall, provides creative, dynamic leadership, and desires to make the library the center of the intellectual life at Asbury University; thinking institutionally and enabling the library to effectively meet institutional excellence.
  • A minimum of five years of increasing administrative experience, preferably in a private liberal arts college, and a proven record of active participation in professional library organizations.
  • A clear vision for and understanding of current academic librarianship; a thorough knowledge of and experience with emerging technologies and their impact on all aspects of the library.
  • A passion for and commitment to providing the best possible user-oriented library services.
  • Evidence of personal integrity and professional conduct.
  • The ability to provide collaborative and collegial leadership.
  • Articulate and persuasive oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to manage the budget within the given resources and creatively realign resources to meet new needs while supporting the library’s excellence.

Supervision Received:

This is a 12-month administrative appointment, reporting directly to the Provost, with faculty rank.

Supervision of Others:

Direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Library Services, Distance Services and Research Librarian. General supervision over all library faculty, staff, and student workers.
