Dr. Ken Pickerill is Chairperson of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and Professor of Physical Education. He has been a faculty member at Asbury University since 1991. He also serves as the Coordinator of athletic compliance for the University and the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC).
Prior to Asbury he served as a member of the faculty of Wingate University (NC), was honored as Educator of the Year for Special Populations in North Carolina and was the president of the Board of Directors for the Union County (NC) Group Home. For eight years he coordinated events and volunteers for both the Union County and the Piedmont Regional Special Olympics Games (NC).
In addition to the publication of a book pertaining to the health and wellness of persons serving as members of the clergy, Dr. Pickerill has published articles in the Kentucky Recreation and Parks Society Journal and the Asbury Theological Journal. He has given presentations at seminars and conferences in Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina and Ohio on the subject as well. Other research pertaining to pedagogy and learning styles has been published in the SRATE Journal and presented at a teacher educators’ conference in Illinois.
Current community service includes holding the offices of president of the board for the Martha R. Jones Foundation for Health Education and vice-president of the Foundation for United Methodists, a scholarship-granting board on the campus of Asbury Theological Seminary. He is a past president of the Kentucky Recreation and Parks Society.
Dr. Pickerill is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church (West Ohio Conference). He has served as a pastor in local church parishes in Ohio, North Carolina, and Kentucky. He is married to Linda, an instructor of piano, both privately and for Asbury University. They are the parents of two children, both graduates of Asbury University—Christine (’97), (husband, Rick Durrance) and Andrew (’03), (wife, Courtney, ’06)—and grandparents of six grandchildren.
