“Strength in the Heat of the Battle” – Dr. Rocky Wallace

“I lift my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” – Psalm 121:1-2

When I was a young boy, my Dad taught me key Scriptures that I committed to memory. He was a young pastor, and he and Mom valued greatly the Biblical principle of raising their kids up in the ways of the Lord.

As I grew old enough to play baseball, realizing that my faith was with me at all times, a regular routine I developed was to quote Scripture in ballgames.  In fact, this habit made all the difference.  I remember standing on the mound in a tight situation in a close game, and literally turning with my back to home plate and looking into the distance, while saying to myself, “I look to the hills from which cometh my help.” And another favorite was, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Always, I would then have a renewed focus, peace, and confidence as I completed that inning of the game.

Today, as life carries many more burdens than back then as a fourteen year old, I am reminded that this awesome God still hears my prayers—when I but remember that He is always there to provide for me that quiet, peaceful, unshakable strength—whatever stressors are impacting my day.
