“A Great Coach, A Greater Man” – Dr. Rocky Wallace

September 18, 2017

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” – Philippians 1:6

The coach felt it was time to retire. He had been at this for a long time. As a Christian role model, he had been a great influence on hundreds of kids. Not once had he swore in front of an athlete. His name in the community was one of a true living legend who had done it the way it was supposed to be done—no cheating scandals, no rumors of being a jerk in real life. In fact, he had recently been selected for his region’s coaching Hall of Fame for his lifetime of honorable work.

But then came a conversation with his superintendent. “What if you retire, but I hire you back part-time just to be a substitute teacher for us and to coach? We need your leadership in this community. The kids need you.”

And so, on Friday nights these days, roaming the sidelines doing what he loves, the veteran servant leader toils away. Not for the money. Not for the glory. But because he has a gift, and God has called him to keep using it. And he does it so well—teaching young athletes what life is really about…not so much by what he knows, but more by who he is as a person.
