Dr. Mark Schell – “The Stewardship of Work”
Read Ecclesiastes 5:18-20
“Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work—this is a gift of God.” -- Ecclesiastes 5:19
The Bible is very clear on this point. Work is good! Idleness is bad! Work gives us a sense of purpose and allows us to creatively use the gifts God has given to us. Idleness leads to boredom, which tends to waste those same gifts. Work encourages responsibility and service to others. Idleness tends to be selfish and lacks purpose and drive. Work allows one to earn a living, support themselves, and give back to their community. Idleness tends to produce lethargy and requires others to support you.
Stewardship encompasses many things, but certainly stewardship of our time is one of the most important. Each person has a limited amount of time allotted to them on this earth. It is important that we use the time we have been given as effectively as possible. There is no denying that we live in an entertainment-saturated culture that encourages us to waste monumental amounts on time on pleasure of self. The American motto seems to be, “Idleness is good! Work is bad!”
The Bible says that “being happy in our work” is “a gift of God” and that it is good for us “to find satisfaction in our toilsome labor.”
