Dr. Claire Peterson – “How to Eat Bread”
“Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” -- Deuteronomy 6:6-9
God’s word is life. This is why scripture is called “light,” “bread,” and “food.” It imparts life, and today’s passage reminds us of how and how often we are to take it in. At all times, we are to consume it.
“when you lie down and when you rise”
This consumption is, moreover, a decidedly active process: we are to consider it, chew it, and digest it.
“talk about them”
Finally, like most good meals, this is not a private one: it is to be openly shared with others.
“when you are at home and when you are away”
“fix them as an emblem on your forehead”
God’s word is life. Let us treat it as such so that it may permeate even the depths of our hearts.
“Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart.”
