Transformations Project

Lilly Scholars Program

Our distinctive Lilly Scholars Program has near-term and long-term potency for the Transformations Project. It will foster high level scholarship in vocation and vocation-related areas such as faith formation, moral development, and the significance of liberal education. This program will be used to attract and cultivate early leaders of our Transformations program who will also form a strong leadership nucleus on vocation for Asbury College. Both Wesley’s own insistence on intense study and our motto (“erudition”) give good grounds for this initiative.

Three Scholars will be competitively selected annually to serve a two-year term revolving around intensive engagement with vocational matters. One Lilly Scholar per year may come from those in our educational staff who have appropriate qualifications. Each Lilly Scholar will receive .25 load reduction for two years as well as a stipend for two summer’s work. Each Lilly Scholar will have the responsibility to:

  • Do research and writing on vocation that connects with the emerging national conversation on the subject, thereby, over time, ensuring that Asbury College is strongly connected to the national discussion on vocation and is positioned to make a positive contribution to it.
  • Consult with the Director, other leadership of the Transformations Project, Curriculum Committee, etc. as resource persons.
  • Serve as leaders for or give talks at certain campus forums, programs, and Vocational Study Retreats (following)
  • Generate a written report of research and present it in both on-campus (e.g., our Faculty Development Seminars) and off-campus venues (e.g., regional and national conferences).
  • Seek to publish the results of the research in article, book, or film format.

Cumulatively, over time, form a strong core of thinking on campus regarding vocation.
