Alumnus wins national surgery competition
By Heidi Heater, a junior from Jackson, Ky.
WILMORE, KY—Gary Wortz ’00, won first place in the American College of Eye Surgeons (ACES) 2007 Bloomberg Memorial Resident Videotape Competition for cataract or implant surgery.
“I owe much of my professional success to my experiences and education at Asbury College,” said Wortz, the chief resident at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. “My professors challenged me beyond what I thought I could accomplish, and because of that I have done more than I could have ever dreamed. Beyond the educational rigors, Asbury helped sharpen my eternal perspective. Good works are only good if they are accompanied by love for people that is inspired by Christ.”
This contest is the only national cataract surgery competition for ophthalmology students. In order to compete, ophthalmology residents submit a videotape of a cataract surgery performed entirely by the resident.
Currently, Wortz is developing an eye care clinic through Southland Christian Church’s Refuge Clinic as a way of providing free medical care to the impoverished in the community. In the future, he hopes to provide free eye surgery through mission work overseas.
