Media communications graduate wins Emmy

Brock Smith won an Emmy for his student film.WILMORE, KY—Brock Smith, a 2008 Asbury College graduate, won a student Emmy at the 44th Annual Ohio Valley Regional Emmy Awards. The presentation in Cincinnati is Aug. 9.

He received the award for “Visceral,” a short film premiered at the Highbridge Film Festival in April. At the festival, Smith’s intense drama claimed awards for best drama, audience favorite, best cinematography, best audio, best editing and best special effects.

Smith wrote the film on his commutes from work and shot it with a $300 budget for his final project in digital field production.
Mitch Colley ’08 played in Smith's film. Colley was named Actor of the Year by the International Model and Talent Association.
“I liked the idea of the government trying to make the best cloned soldier possible, and the best way to do that was to instill fake memories of him being in love with this girl. This gives him the highest potential to become the most efficient solider. Yet they ran into a flaw in all of their tests: because he is in love, when it comes down to saving himself (the mission) or her, he keeps sacrificing himself to save her. It’s a catch 22,” Smith said.

Smith is filming the Olympics in China with 50 other Asbury College students. He plans to move back to Los Angeles next year to continue his career.

The Ohio Valley region includes Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia. Smith’s project competed with student projects from many of the region’s universities.

Smith is the third Asbury College student to win an Emmy in the last five years. The others were awarded in 2006 and 2003.
