Math major receives DOD scholarship
WILMORE, KY —Asbury College junior Kelly Christensen, has been selected to receive the Department of Defense’s (DOD) Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) scholarship.
The SMART scholarship was created to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, according to the SMART Web site. The program provides a full scholarship to an accredited college or university as well as a living allowance and guaranteed paid internships with the DOD. In return, the scholarship recipient agrees to work for the DOD after graduating.
"This is a very elite program to encourage students to pursue advanced degrees in science and math," said Dr. David Coulliette, chairman of the mathematics department. He added that while the program looked like it was geared toward graduate students, he encouraged Christensen to apply anyway and was pleased when she was accepted. "Her selection gives us more confirmation on the quality of our programs."
