Men's basketball hires assistant for 2007-08
On April 20, Jim Aller, head men's basketball coach, announced Bart Flener as the new men's assistant coach. Flener comes to Asbury College with 14 years head coaching experience, mainly on the high school level, where his teams have a record of 251-151. He will serve as the JV head coach as well as assistant for varsity games.
"Bart brings a tremendous knowledge and experience of the game to us and will be a great resource for Asbury College basketball," Aller said.
Flener is principal at West Jessamine High School and was the head boys' basketball coach at West Jessamine from 2004 to 2006, compiling a 41-19 record. Flener was the head boys' basketball coach at Lexington Catholic High School from 2002 to 2004. Flener's teams posted a 53-12 record at Catholic. Before his move to Lexington, he was the head boys' basketball coach at Glasgow High School from 1995-2002, turning around a program that finished 9-45 the two years prior to his arrival. His teams finished with a 137-65 record and won the 2001 All "A" Championship, a tournament held each February between the single-A class teams of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA). He also coached Kentucky's 2002 Mr. Basketball, Brandon Stockton, who went on to play for the University of Kentucky.
"After a year away from the sidelines, I am excited about a return to the game and I especially look forward to the relationships a coach builds with his players," Flener said. "I feel fortunate for the opportunity here at Asbury College to use my influence for Christ on and off the court."
