Math department modeling contest underway
By Matt Tidman, a senior from Wilmore.
WILMORE, KY—This Valentine’s Day, Asbury College students have a date with a model—a math model, that is. Fifteen Asbury students will participate in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling, Feb. 14-18.
Five teams will participate in the contest that proposes real-world questions for college students to find mathematical solutions. The questions can range from plotting the propagation of the AIDS virus in Africa or finding the most efficient way to move passengers through security at La Guardia International Airport.
Asbury College has participated in the modeling contest since 1987. Often papers submitted by Asbury students have won honorable mentions, the top 50 percent of submitted papers, and a few papers have won meritorious mentions, the top 15 percent.
“I consistently get feedback from our alums who say that math modeling experience was the single most important experience they had here to prepare them for their working environment,” said Dr. David Coulliette, chairman of the mathematics and computer science department.
The event will begin Thursday night with a “download dinner,” and students are encouraged to come and support the modelers throughout the weekend as they work on the third floor of the Hamann-Ray building.
