As web editor for “Metro Sports D.C.,” Haggard not only has to write, she has to run. For her column in the publication, Haggard joined several running clubs and will share her experiences with readers who are looking for a club. One Saturday morning, she ran eight miles along the Potomac River, meeting locals and enjoying the D.C. culture.

Since “Metro Sports D.C.” is a fitness sports magazine, Haggard has the opportunity to participate in various activities, such as kayaking, cycling, rock climbing, hiking or adventure racing.

“My editor asked me the other day if I was afraid of water,” she said. “I said I wasn’t. Then he asked me if I wanted to learn how to kayak and write about it. I definitely took that opportunity. I have a lot of fun on the job.”

In addition to on-the-job experience, Haggard also meets once per week with 40 other interns at the National Press Club. Together they attend seminars given by think tanks and persons, such as retired Senator Bob Dole, and receive journalism training.

Living in D.C. has given Haggard the opportunity to explore her nation’s capitol and embrace the bustling, achievement-filled climate of the city.

“Sometimes I will go to the Smithsonian before work,” she said. “I saw an Afghanistan art exhibit at the National Gallery before I went to a journalism lecture. I attended a luncheon on the national housing crisis from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.”

Because of her training in the technical aspects of journalism at Asbury College, Haggard feels well prepared to write articles for a popular magazine in D.C.

“My professors at Asbury College have taught the ethics of journalism, which is so important in a cutthroat city like D.C.,” Haggard said.
