Clay Hassler performed in numerous productions including Godspell, Hamlet and Shakespeare Abridged.WILMORE, KY—Senior Clay Hassler has been accepted to Florida State University’s Film School Master of Fine Arts program. Hassler, an English literature and theatre and cinema performance major at Asbury College, was one of 24 students selected from 900 applicants.

“We offer our students a framework with which to grow and learn,” said Jeff Day, assistant professor of theatre. “We provide opportunities for them to develop their individual talents in acting, directing and writing. Clay took advantage of these opportunities and honed his talent. This is an affirmation of the potential of the College’s program.”

Florida State is recognized by the Directors Guild of America for its “distinguished contribution to American culture through the world of film and television.” Faculty members include independent filmmaker Victor Nunez (Ulee’s Gold), Academy Award winner and sound mixer Richard Portman (Godfather), television director Chip Chalmers (Star Trek: Next Generation), and story executive Valerie Scoon (Malcom X).

“The theatre and cinema performance program abides by the principle of helping our students become ‘roaring lambs’,” Day said. “We encourage our students to go out into the mainstream industry and do excellent work and be a light to the world by the way they live their lives. There is no separation between the Christian and the artists. We encourage our students to integrate their faith not just in the art they create, but in their everyday lives.”
