Kresge and Glide-Crawford women go to Great Lengths
WILMORE, KY—The women of Kresge and Glide-Crawford Halls shed their locks this week during the Great Lengths Big Cut. In October, more than 20 women made a commitment to donate their hair for charity.
On Monday, April 28, eight hair stylists from the community along with two stylists from Kresge Hall donated their time and talents to cut and style hair. The women who received cuts donated the locks to one of three organizations—Wigs for Kids, Locks of Love and Beautiful Lengths. These organizations make wigs for children and women who have lost their hair due to cancer and other medical conditions.
Junior Laura Hogue from Beverly, Ohio, wanted to donate her hair for a long time to benefit people with cancer. “I wasn't really nervous until the day of the cut,” Hogue said. “And then I hardly realized she was cutting the ponytail off until she was halfway through it! When it was off, the RA's and supporters on the deck were cheering and saying, ‘Oh Laura, it's so cute!’”
Wilmore junior Kendra White, a double major in media communications and theatre and cinema, had a hard time waiting for cut day. “I came so close to cutting my hair so many times,” she said. “By January I was more than ready for a change, but I kept with it because...every time I went to cut my hair I was like, ‘Kids need this more than you do.’”
Jennie Small, a junior elementary education major from Lexington, Ky., is no stranger to donating her hair. This week was the fourth time she cut her locks for charity, but it was the first time she allowed one of her friends to do the honors. “She was ecstatic,” Small said. “Excited people should not have scissors. I’m glad I could participate in the Great Lengths event.”
Junior Rachael Schmoutz, a Christian ministries major from Franklin, Penn., wanted to donate her hair because of family members who lost their battles with cancer. “I was nervous to have it cut, however, knowing that someone would be able to receive such a simple gift gave me the motivation,” Schmoutz said. “God humbled me a lot in this process as I tried to be selfish and keep my hair. He said ‘it will grow back for you...it can't for those who will be receiving it.’”
