Men & Women fall to #1 seeds in KIAC Tournament

Wilmore, KY - Both Asbury men and women stood with a chance on Friday to each upset the #1 seeds of the 2008 KIAC Basketball Tournament but each fell short. The women took the floor first and fell to Midway College, 58-38 while the men's rally against IU-Southeast came up short in a 78-72 loss.

The women tied the score against Midway at 28 but would watch as the regular-season champs would score the next 12 points to take a 40-28 lead and cruise to the final result. Jenny Bunge led the Eagles with 11 points and also registered three blocks. The result ended the women's season at 13-16 on the year. Junior Anna Stephenson was named to the KIAC All-Conference team.

The men's upset bid against IU-Southeast was led by junior Michael Spann who scored a career-high 34 points in a physical game. Asbury only led early 3-0 but would stay within single digits of the Grenadiers in the second half. Made free throws by IUS down the stretch kept Asbury at bay, ending their hopes of playing for the championship on their home floor. With the loss, the men stand at 17-13 overall. Both Michael and Ben Spann along with Brett Johnson were named to the KIAC All-Conference team.

The men's season is not over as they will play Thursday, March 6th against Oakland City (Ind.) University at home in the NCCAA Mid East Regional Final. The winner will advance to the NCCAA National Tournament, March 13-15. Tip off for Thursday's game is set for 7:00 p.m.
