Wilmore, Ky. - The third time was the charm for the Eagles as shortstop Terrence Shelburne raced home after a throwing error by the catcher while stealing third secured a 7-6 win over Brescia University in the third game of the four game series.
The Eagles were given a benefit of a 6-0 lead in the third game, largely thanks to three errors allowing three runs in the first inning by the Brescia defense before a two RBI single by Asbury first baseman Geoffery Witt capped the scoring for the Eagles. Asbury would add the sixth run in the second inning when Slade Halvaksz scored on a Terrence Shelburne sac fly.
Strong pitching by starter Gardner Adams would hold until the top of the fifth when Brescia would break through on a three-run homerun by shortstop Kelley Jordan. Adams would be knocked from the game in the sixth when Brescia would add on three more runs before reliever William Blackburn would get the last two outs of the frame, setting the stage for Shelburne's heroics in the seventh.
The Asbury win denied the Wildcats from Owensboro the KIAC title and combined with results from the Alice Lloyd - Berea games over the weekend, the Eagles secured a third place finish in conference. The reward however means a rematch with Brescia in the first round of the KIAC Tournament to be held at Berea beginning Thursday, May 1st. Times will be announced in the next few days.
