Asbury University Commencement
Alec Hill, president of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, will speak at Asbury's Commencement ceremonies on May 10.

This year’s Commencement address will be delivered by Alec Hill, President of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Dedicated to witness and discipleship, InterVarsity is a non-denominational ministry serving nearly 39,000 core students and faculty on college and university campuses nationwide. Additionally, the organization operates a publishing arm, InterVarsity Press, and the triennial Urbana Student Missions Conference.

Hill says he looks forward to speaking to Asbury students not only because he is committed to “the next generation of Christian leaders,” but also because his own faith has been shaped by the personal piety and social impulse of the Wesleyan tradition. The title of his address is “Living Courageously,” a call for Christian students to live as bold witnesses for Christ.

“This is a time in which greater courage will be needed as our faith and our culture diverge more,” Hill said. “Clearly with InterVarsity, since we’re on secular campuses, we experience a lot of that divergence daily. The sense of living passionately and courageously is what I’m excited to talk about.”

For senior Caitlyn White, “living courageously” will mean putting four years’ preparation to work for the Kingdom of God. An elementary education major, White says she can’t wait to be teaching full-time, and while she is nervous about this new stage in her life, she looks forward to the coming years as “a really exciting adventure.”

“I've spent four years bettering myself, soaking in the word of God, and what it looks like to build the Kingdom, and now we actually get to go out and build the body and change the world, even if that's just my small impact,” White said.

The Baccalaureate address will be given by Rev. David MacFarland, who currently serves as senior pastor at Nathaniel Mission in Lexington, Ky. Nathaniel Mission provides for the physical needs of its neighbors through community outreach and its free medical clinic, and their spiritual needs through Nathaniel United Methodist Church. MacFarland has a Master of Divinity from the Lexington (Ky.) Theological Seminary.
