WILMORE, Ky. — Members of the community joined students, faculty and staff to fill Asbury University’s Hughes Auditorium Monday morning as Douglas Gresham, film producer and stepson of Christian author C.S. Lewis, shared memories of his life with Lewis and insights into the faith they shared.
Gresham — who was also a guest on FOX 56’s morning television programming on Monday — will speak again at 7 p.m. tonight in Hughes Auditorium with Dr. Devin Brown, a member of Asbury’s faculty and author of “A Life Observed: A Spiritual Biography of C.S. Lewis.” The public is welcome to attend — admission is free — and stay for a reception and book signing in the Student Center after the presentation.
Gresham was introduced first to the creative mind of Lewis — known as “Jack” to friends and family — through his fantasy series, The Chronicles of Narnia. He met him in person a few years later, and as they got to know each other better, Jack’s whole-hearted embrace of the Christian life, with its joys and challenges, set the stage for Gresham’s own surrender to faith much later in life.
“I gave my life to Christ because there is no one else,” Gresham said to the group. “A group of dons and faculty at Oxford were once discussing Christianity in a common lounge, and when Jack walked in, they asked him, ‘What makes Christianity different than any other religion in the world?’ Jack said, ‘Oh, that’s easy. Grace.’ And it’s true.”
Gresham will also speak at events in the Cincinnati and Louisville areas this week. He will speak on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. at Vineyard Community Church (Tri-County) in Cincinnati) and on Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. at Walnut Street Baptist Church in Louisville.
