WILMORE, Ky. — Asbury University’s graduating seniors, the Awakened Class of 2013, closed the academic year with a group musical number in Chapel on Friday, wrapping up a week of honors and celebration.

The Chapel service included remarks from alumni Ben McKain ‘10 and Kara Laufenburger ’10. According to Asbury tradition, each incoming freshman class receives a name, Bible verse and colors from two seniors who are elected by their peers to sponsor the new students during their first year at Asbury. McKain and Laufenburger sponsored the Class of 2013.

“My single greatest regret of my Asbury experience was that I got only one year with you,” said McKain. “You have so much passion for what is good, right and holy. You’re going to blow the world away with your capacity for great things.”

Per tradition, the senior class announced its class gift to the campus at Senior Chapel: a new picnic area to be created near the soon-to-be-renovated baseball and softball fields.

Earlier in the week, faculty, staff and students gathered for an Honors Convocation in which outstanding students, many of whom are graduating seniors, were recognized for their accomplishments.

“The high academic achievement we recognized at Convocation reflects more than the gift of a quick mind and natural talent, which many of our students possess in abundance,” said Provost Jon Kulaga. “It also indicates a character that embraces hard work, asking and answering tough questions and sticking with a project until it’s done well. We’re proud of our students for demonstrating well-rounded excellence.”
