Everyone safe after van fire
WILMORE, KY—The Asbury College softball team remains in good spirits after encountering a scary scene returning from Athens, West Virginia, this weekend.
While returning from a double-header sweep of Concord University, the team's caravan was near Ashland, Kentucky, when the equipment van started malfunctioning.
Noticing smoke coming from under the hood, the driver quickly pulled the van off the road and evacuated the two players safely from the vehicle. Minutes later, the van was engulfed in flames.
"The main thing is that no one was hurt, possessions can be replaced but lives can not," said Asbury Athletic Director Gary Kempf. "We do not want this to impede the progress of the season. We do not view this as a tragedy because no one was hurt; it is simply an obstacle that will be overcome."
The team lost nearly all of their gear including uniforms, helmets, catcher's gear, and bats as well as players losing gloves and cleats. Other personal items were lost in the fire including a laptop computer. The team plans to acquire the equipment they need to finish out the season. Tomorrow's game against Georgetown College has been canceled.
