Flu vaccinations available on campus
WILMORE, KY—The Student Health Center reminds students that flu vaccinations are available for $15. Flu season is upon us and the single best way to prevent the illness is to get vaccinated.
Carol Amey, director of student health services on campus, says that even healthy college students can catch and spread the flu. The flu can cause serious complications and can lead to missing a week of classes or more. Symptoms of the flu include high fever, headache, extreme fatigue, cough and severe muscle aches.
To obtain a flu vaccination, full-time students (enrolled in 9 hours or more) must call ext. 2277 to schedule an appointment for the vaccine. The Student Health Center is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Vaccinations are available through December, but the Health Center suggests students receive the vaccine before leaving for Thanksgiving break. The Student Health Center accepts check, cash or Visa/Mastercard. Faculty and staff are encouraged contact the Jessamine County Health Department, local doctor’s office, pharmacy or newspaper for vaccination information.
In addition to an annual vaccine, the centers for disease control and prevention also encourage people to practice good health habits like washing your hands often. Other suggestions include avoiding contact with the sick, staying home when you are ill, covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. College students can stay healthy by getting plenty of rest, being physically active, managing stress, drinking plenty of fluids and eating nutritious foods.
