Virginia Bowles
Assistant Professor
VIRGINIA BERGQUIST BOWLES has been on the voice faculty of Asbury College since 1986. She serves as Coordinator of Vocal Studies and teaches several classes: Vocal Diction, Vocal Pedagogy and Repertoire, and Voice Class. In addidtion, she assists with both Opera and Musical Theatre productions, conducts the Women’s Choir and maintains a Vocal Studio of 15-18 private vocal students.
Before coming to Kentucky, Prof. Bowles taught in a large high school Choral Arts program in Malden, MA., at Bunker Hill Community College in Charleston, MA and for an extension course offered through Harvard University in Cambridge, MA.
In addition to her teaching, Prof. Bowles has extensive performing experience. She has sung with the New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta and with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Boston, at Tanglewood, and in Carnegie Hall under Seiji Ozawa, Sir Colin Davis, Leonard Bernstein, Edo DeWaart and Klaus Tennstedt. Prof. Bowles has also recorded several film soundtracks, including Close Encounters and Indiana Jones with John Williams and the Boston Symphony.
Locally, Professor Bowles has appeared with the Lexington Philharmonic, serves as a soloist for the Lexington Chamber Chorale, and is an active recitalist in central Kentucky. She has degrees from St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN and New England Conservatory, Boston, MA.
