Academic Background and Interests
I earned a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Inha University in Incheon of South Korea, a master’s degree in mathematics from Arizona State University in 1987 and a Ph.D. in math from ASU in 1994. The title of my dissertation was “Lax-Phillips Scattering Theory of Axiom-A Diffeomorphisms.” I have to confess that I do not remember much of it nor have I done anything with it since. I taught for a short time at ASU and then moved to Marion, Indiana, in1995 where I taught at Indiana Wesleyan University until the summer of 2001. I have been teaching at Asbury College since the fall of 2001. There is a good group of math and science students at Asbury. I am really enjoying teaching here.
Currently I am interested in origami and its connections to math, art and science. I seem to spend lots of time (maybe, too much time) with paper these days, but paper folding and learning some connections to other areas are challenging, yet so fascinating to me.
Family
I am married with 3 children: Ouree (5th-grader girl), David (2nd-grader boy) and Nara (3 year-old girl). My wife (Namhee) is busy and doing an excellent job in taking care of all of us and preparing to begin her career in music education. She recently earned a Ph. D. in early childhood music education from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign.
Other interests
I like playing golf. I have not broken 80’s yet, but I keep trying. Even though I do not play classical guitar these days, it is always in the back of my mind that I would resume guitar playing again sooner or later. I love guitar music.
