Academic Preparation
After visiting Asbury on many occasions as a sister to an Asburian, I
enrolled at Asbury and graduated with a PE/Health K-12 education degree
in 1988. I enrolled at the University of Kentucky in the Spring of 1989
and completed Certification in Special Education. Subsequently I
completed an MSW from U.K. and I am currently enrolled there as a
doctoral student in Special Education.
Instructional Areas and Professional Interests
My first teaching job was teaching middle school in inner-city
Lexington. My fourteen years at Crawford Middle School were definitely
invaluable in preparing me to teach in the Education Department here at
Asbury. In 2001 I came to Asbury to teach part-time Exceptional Learner
on Monday nights and I have continued that class to the present. Coming
on board full-time in 2005 was a life-changing experience but one I am
very thankful to have made.
I have a passion for teaching and a love for meeting student’s needs
which has brought me to the place I am today. I am passionate about
preparing future educators and in particular preparing them for the
diverse and exceptional learners they will have in their classrooms.
My areas of research center around special education and in particular
accommodating all learners in their specific learning environment. My
doctoral work is exposing me to an in-depth study in the many areas of
special education as well as challenging me to develop my research
skills.
Personal and Family Interests
I love people and try to spend as much time as possible cultivating and
investing in my family and friends. Being a teacher has allowed me to
travel in the summer, which in turn has provided opportunities for me
to do summer mission trips. I have traveled to four continents and
learned to love people from Hungary to Nigeria. God has opened my eyes
to the needs of the world, which in turn has broadened my world view.
Along with traveling, I love to bike, play tennis and curl up with a good book.
Call to Teaching
God called me to teaching even when I wasn’t aware that teaching was my
calling. I love helping people so I have always known I would be
working in an area of service. I am thankful that God opened my eyes
here at Asbury almost twenty years ago to the call of teaching. I am
thankful for the opportunity to be back here teaching and giving back
to the institution that challenged me to see beyond my own backyard.
