The Communications major at Asbury College emphasizes experiential learning to include frequent trips to major communication hubs in the USA and abroad. Students are encouraged to take seminar classes that tour New York City and Washington D.C. Tours include learning opportunities like visiting international public relations firms like Ogilvy and Edelman in New York, as well as better understanding the media with back stage tours of CBS, NBC and CNN. Intermixed with the educational benefits are social and cultural highlights such as eating at the United Nations, visiting the David Letterman and Saturday Night Live shows, as well as visiting tourist locations like the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Rockefeller plaza, shows on Broadway, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Ground Zero in New York. Leadership emphasis students are encouraged to participate in seminars to Washington D.C., visiting the White House, U.S. Congress, the Pentagon, Smithsonian museums and many other historic monuments.

Instructors at Asbury look for special events opportunities to give students operational experience and positive resume bullets. One of the largest events was the “Narnia Night” celebration, drawing over 1000 people; the evening extravaganza featured the world premier of the Narnia movie ten-minute trailer. Other opportunities have included running a campaign for a local politician, promoting Ichthus (the original Christian Music concert) and doing public relations for the Highbridge Film Festival.

One great reason to major in Communications at Asbury College is the world-wide contacts that provide stimulating internships. A good internship is not only important to broaden student skills, but they may also lead to important life-long contacts and future careers. Asbury students have interned at CNN in New York, the Pentagon in Washington D.C., the Air Force Academy, Joseph-Beth bookstores, the International Coach Federation and with politicians at various levels. The possibilities are endless, and Asbury Communications professors spend the time it takes to ensure students get the opportunities they need to prepare them for extraordinary careers.
