The Program
Through an original 4-year gift by the Moore and Barney II Foundations, Asbury was one of the first schools (now over 30 in the country) to begin a Servant Leadership Award Program. Asbury matched the funds and four Juniors are selected annually to be recognized in chapel, given a $1000 award, and honored at a luncheon on campus for their service to both the local community and campus. They also receive a "Divine Servant Statue" designed by Max Greiner of Texas. They in turn donate 25% of their award to a local service agency, church or mission of their choice. Students are selected by a committee of faculty staff and students and are honored each spring. One of the original funders have agreed to give $15,000 in matching funds toward endowing the program and have agreed and encouraged us to name the award after someone we deemed is deserving of this honor.
Prof and Sue Lauter have always been about giving back, whether it was opening their homes to student government leaders, sponsoring missions trips, letting student live with them, or helping student teachers through rough spots in their placements. By endowing this award and naming it after Roy, it allows us to honor Roy by annually reminding the Asbury Community what service looks like, by inviting Roy and Sue back to campus to be a part of the recognition luncheon and program, and by allowing alums an opportunity to be a part of continuing this recognition of students and faculty focused on serving others. A plaque has been designed also that would have Roy's name on it and displayed in Fletcher-Early with each year's recipients.
