How can I set up my computer to access the Web?

Note to Dell laptop users

Some new Dell laptops have a utility that turns off the internal network card to save power when the computer is running on battery power. To disable this feature, go to Start > Control Panel and double-click on the "Internal NIC Configuration" icon. Select "Always activate on battery." and click "Apply" then "Close."

Internet Explorer for Windows

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Click Internet Options under the Tools menu
  • Click the Connections tab
  • Click the LAN Settings button
  • Check "Use Proxy Server for your LAN"
  • Enter proxy33.asbury.edu in the address field
  • Enter 8080 in the port field

Safari for Mac

  • Click the Proxies tab under Network in System Preferences
  • Check Web Proxy and enter proxy33.asbury.edu and port 8080
  • Check Secure Web Proxy and enter proxy33.asbury.edu and port 8080

Firefox 2

  • Click Preferences under Tools (Windows) or under Firefox (Mac)
  • Click the Advanced tab
  • Click Settings under the Network Tab
  • Select Manual proxy configuration
  • Enter proxy33.asbury.edu in the HTTP Proxy field
  • Enter 8080 in the Port field
  • Check "Use this proxy server for all protocols"

How can I access my "U drive" from my room?

Windows Users

  • Right-click on My Computer and select "Map network drive..."
  • Select an empty drive letter (generally U is used, but you may choose any letter you wish)
  • In the Folder field, enter \\asa\username if your last name is between A-K. If your last name is between L-Z, enter \\levi\username.
  • Check Reconnect at logon
  • Click "connect using a different user name" and enter your username@asbury.edu and your password
  • Click Finish and your user space should appear under My Computer.

Mac Users

  • Open Finder and click on Network (left side of the window). After a few seconds a list of folders will appear.
  • Double click the Admin folder. If your last name is between A-K, double-click on the Asa folder. If your last name is between L-Z, double-click on the Levi folder.
  • Select your username from the drop-down list (once you click the arrows and the list appears, you can type your username to find it faster).
  • Click OK. It will prompt you to log in. Change the “Workgroup or Domain” field to Admin. Change the name to your username and enter your password. It will appear on your desktop as your username.
  • If you wish to have a permanent link to it on your desktop, Ctrl-click on the icon and select Make Alias. It will create an alias (or shortcut) on your desktop; just double-click this in the future to log on and access your user space.

How can I access Asbury Webmail?

Web access to your e-mail is at https://mail.asbury.edu. In the field labeled User Name, enter username@asbury.edu, replacing “username” with your username.

If your network account was created after 2005, it should be firstname.lastname (so your logon would be john.smith@asbury.edu).

If your network account was created before 2005, it should be the first four letters of your last name and the last four numbers of your social security number (so your username would be smit5555@asbury.edu).

How can I obtain a new Asbury ID card?

If you are a new student, your first ID is already paid for. During freshmen orientation the ID station will be located in the Luce Center.

If your ID has been lost or damaged a replacement will cost $11. Go to the Cashier's office in the Administration building and pay. They will give you a recipt to bring to the Helpdesk so we can print a new ID for you.

For greater privacy, you should change your password immediately

  • Press 2900
  • Press your mailbox number, which is your extension, plus "#"
  • Press your password number, which can be obtained from your RA, plus "#"
  • Enter 84
  • Enter your new 4-digit password plus "#"
  • Enter your new 4-digit password again plus "#"
  • Enter your old password

Check for voicemail messages

  • Press 2900
  • Press your mailbox number (phone extension number) plus "#"
  • Press your password number plus "#"

How can I configure AIM, iChat, or MSN Messenger?

AIM In Windows

  • Open AIM and click on Setup
  • In Sign On/Off click Connection and set your port to 23

AIM Triton, the latest release of AIM, does not work on our network. If you have this program, please download and install the most recent compatible version from oldversion.com.

  • In the accounts pane, select your AIM account and change the port to 23

  • Download the latest version of MSN Messenger
  • Check that you have your email address and password typed correctly, and in the preference pane, under the Accounts tab, select "Automatically configure using the System Network settings"

How can I access my Asbury email with Microsoft Outlook or Entourage?

Outlook for Windows

  • Go to the Start menu > Settings > Control Panel and double-click on the mail icon
  • Select "Add a new e-mail account" and click Next
  • Select "Microsoft Exchange Server" and click Next
  • In the "Microsoft Exchange Server" field enter "mail.asbury.edu" and in the "User Name" field enter your first and last name separated by a period (ex: firstname.lastname) and click "Check Name." If you entered your username correctly, it will be underline. Click Next.
  • Under "Deliver new e-mail to the following location:" select the option with your last name followed by your first name and click "Finished

Entourage for Mac

  • Open Entourage and click on Entourage > Account Settings
  • Click Exchange and then New
  • Enter your Asbury e-mail address and User ID. If your network account was created after 2005, your User ID should be firstname.lastname. If your network account was created before 2005, it should be the first four letters of your last name and the last four numbers of your social security number (so your User ID would be smit5555).
  • Use "Admin" for the domain and enter your password
  • Enter a name for the account, such as your User ID and click Next
  • Entourage will attempt to set everything else up for you. Click Next again to see the auto configuration.
  • The Exchange server should be mail.asbury.edu, and the LDAP server should be dc1. Click the next button.
  • Click Verify My Settings to make sure everything is working correctly
  • If so, click Next and enter an account name such as Asbury or your username. Click Finish and close the Account Settings window.
  • Entourage will now sync with your e-mail account, which may take awhile if you have lots of mail

How can I forward my Asbury from Outlook to another account such as Hotmail or Yahoo?

  • Open Outlook and log into your mailbox
  • Go to Tools on the menu bar and select Rules Wizard
  • Click New to create a new rule
  • Select Start from a blank rule
  • Select Check messages when they arrive and click Next
  • Select Where my name is in the To or Cc box and click Next
  • Select Forward it to people or distribution list
  • Click on People or distribution list -- a Rule Address box appears
  • Click the New button in the lower left -- a New Entry box displays
  • Select New Entry at the bottom and then select Internet Address in the list box and click OK -- a New Internet Address Properties box displays
  • Key a display name and then the e-mail address; click OK
  • Click Next
  • If you want any exceptions to the rule you created, configure it at this screen. Click Next
  • Specify a name for the rule and turn it on to activate the rule. Click Finish
  • Click OK to close the Rules Wizard
