Dr. Melanie Starks Kierstead, “Dr. K“, Director of GPS-MAPS (My Achievement Pathway Services), the Navigation Center

Dr. K's academic professional credits (listed below) include a Ph.D. (Drew University, NJ) & five assorted Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees, as well as two decades of University teaching and advising. She has taught and advised at Asbury University for 13 years.

As Director of the GPS MAPS, the Navigation Center,  Dr. Kierstead oversees the care for GPS students, from Application to Graduation. We help individuals establish and maintain an aggressive Academic Plan that balances their other adult responsibilities and a satisfying academic experience, with a clear view toward their earliest possible Graduation. Her goal is to make the GPS student’s experience as seamless as possible.  We coordinate student support services, including transfer credit, financial aid, academic support, as well as the unexpected.  We also recognize that the spiritual component of students need to be nurtured, as a confident, healthy relationship with God will sustain persons through all of life’s challenges.

In response to the question of why do you enjoy working with nontraditional students?, Dr. Kierstead responded, "Throughout my career I have actively participated in Student Success.  One of my earliest professional assignments was creating and developing a program which I named “Operation Success” in which I worked with many students who have remained friends with me over the years, including one of my favorites who currently works with NASA Students program.  Since that time, although primarily in the role of University Professor, I have helped students set goals, learn problem-solving skills, and negotiate personal, academic and professional challenges."

"In my spare time, I enjoy my family. My hobbies include totally remodeling (with husband, Dale) our home which is located on a farm just outside of Wilmore,KY. My husband and I have two “newly adult” children,  two children in elementary school, and a large husky-beagle puppy.  I have done a fair amount of writing and research, and currently I am writing a commentary on the book of Ephesians, and I enjoy mentoring and supporting young researchers and writers."
