Individual Counseling

Individual counseling provides an opportunity for students to talk with a professional Christian counselor, someone who is outside the situation and can therefore offer greater perspective due to their understanding of issues. Our counselors are mature professionals who are mandated to keep information confidential.

Issues need not be severe in nature to seek counseling. Typical concerns may include family or friend conflicts, dating or marital relationships, anxiety, depression, grief, identity and self-esteem issues, eating issues, sexuality, perfectionist behaviors, stress and time management, study skills, etc.

Although the nature of counseling sessions tends to be very personal, we maintain a professional relationship consistent with accepted ethical standards. As a client, you are in complete control to determine the goals, which recommendations you want to pursue, and may end our professional relationship at any time. We will adhere to those decisions. We also reserve the right to terminate our counseling association and/or recommend appropriate referrals when necessary.

Sessions are typically 45 minutes in length. The number of sessions can range from 1-10 sessions. Appointments are arranged at the convenience of the counselor and student. Due to the high demand for our services, individual counseling is limited to 10 sessions per year. With this limit and the difficulty of transferring to a different counselor in the midst of treatment, the counselor may refer you to an off-campus counselor if it is determined that your issue would be better addressed in greater than 10 sessions, or by services not available at Asbury College.
