Career Counseling
Everyone, at some point in their lives, can benefit from career counseling. Understanding who you are in relation to the world of work can significantly increase your chances for career satisfaction.
Career planning is an ongoing process throughout life. It involves decision making and goal setting that never stop. Seeking career counseling now will prepare you for a lifetime of making important life-changing decisions.
The first step is to contact the Center for Career and Calling (ext. 2401) and ask for a Career Intake. It is quite painless, and you will be given an appointment within a day or so of your call.
Your Career Counselor will ask you questions related to your educational and work experience. This vocational history of you is a very important foundation for this process.
Next, you will begin your career planning adventure by following our Four Year Plan.
Phase One: Self Assessment
You will have the option of taking assessments such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Self-Directed Search, or Strong Interest Inventory that will enable you to better understand your values, interests, personality and abilities.
Phase Two: Exploration of the World, or Work, or Majors Offered at Asbury
The second Phase is lots of fun. You become your own detective in searching out and exploring majors or occupations. Your counselor will have a wealth of resources available to explore options with you. You will learn how to use these resources and find yourself using them throughout life.
Phase Three: Career Decision-Making Strategies
This third Phase is making the actual choice for what to major in or what occupation to pursue. Your counselor will help clarify your goals and determine what strategies are best for you.
Usually, students go through this process in ten sessions or less. You can schedule weekly or bi-weekly appointments. The success of this process depends upon your willingness and effort to stick with it.
Phase Four: Action - Implementing Your Career Plan
The fourth step is to put your plan into action. Whether you need assistance preparing for entrance into your field (resume, job searching, interviewing) or graduate school, your Career Counselor will help you with the details of reaching your goal.
