Debi Powell will begin her sixth season as the women's basketball coach at Asbury College in 2007-08 and is just the second women's basketball coach in the school's history. Asbury marks her first stint as a collegiate head coach, and in 2005-06 the team enjoyed their best season garnering 14 wins, five in conference play.
Powell's legacy was one of the pioneers of the sport of women's basketball during her career at Asbury College. The women's program began in 1991, during her junior year. She still holds the single season records for points per game, averaging 20.4 in 1991-92, and the record for career points per game with 18.4. During her two years she played in 33 games total, also averaging 5.2 rebounds a contest and had 67 assists and 55 steals.
Powell is a 1993 graduate of Asbury College and a third-generation Asburian. She served as the assistant coach for the Eagles beginning in the fall of 1999. During that time, Powell completed a Master of Science degree in Teaching and Coaching in May 2002 from the University of Kentucky. Powell was named the head coach at Asbury for the 2002-2003 season. In January of 2003, she was named the Intramural Coordinator for Asbury College in conjunction with her head coaching duties.
Powell brings a wealth of basketball experience to the position. Following her playing days at Asbury, Powell became the assistant varsity boys' coach at her alma mater, H.H. Dow High School in Midland, Michigan. She primarily worked with the guards in her six seasons at H.H. Dow, which competes in the Saginaw Valley League, one of Michigan's most competitive basketball conferences. Concurrently, from 1994-1998, she served as the Young Life area director in Midland, Michigan.
Powell enjoys traveling with her team to develop Christian worldview. She has taken the team on several spring break trips - Jamaica in 2001, Guatemala in 2004, and Camden, New Jersey in 2006. Additionally, she coached a Basketball Travelers team in Izmir, Turkey during the 2005 World University Games.
In 2007, Powell retired as a soccer referee after a 20-year career. The Central Kentucky Soccer Officials Association selected Powell as the Referee of the Year in 2000 and 2001.
