Women open the season with a 9-0 sweep at Shawnee State
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - The Eagles' women's tennis team was full of unknowns headed into Friday afternoon's season opener against Shawnee State.
The Eagles' brought back just two returners--senior Miriam Waslewski and junior Kara Kaneko--from their roster a season ago, meaning the Eagles, and their opponent, didn't know what to expect for the start of the season.
But the Eagles' and head coach Jarred Miller picked up right where they left off in 2012-13 by sweeping their hosts 9-0.
Freshmen Alex LoPrinzi, Sarah Beth Alford, and Laura Ross matched up in the one, two, and three spots respectively. Each started their collegiate careers with little trouble as they combined to win 36-5 in their matches for three of the Eagles' nine points on the evening.
Classmate Juleah Morehouse collected another point for the visiting Eagles as she defeated Carmen Staton 6-1 and 6-3 in straight sets.
Waslewski (6-2, 6-0) and Kaneko (6-0, 6-0) each won handily in their singles matches, too.
Asbury played to much of the same tune in the doubles matches, sweeping the hosts.
The Eagles return to the courts tomorrow as they travel to Alice Lloyd for a conference matchup before returning home on Monday as they take part in their home opener against Hanover College.
Saturday's match is set for 1 p.m. and Monday's start is scheduled for 4 p.m.
