Eagles Bounce Back with 6-3 Victory

Shelby GillesWILMORE, Ky. – Asbury women’s tennis bounced back from their second loss of the season on Friday with a 6-3 win over Oakland City University on Monday afternoon.  The Eagles lost to the Mighty Oaks 5-4 earlier in the season.

Asbury (7-2) took two of three doubles matches as Shelby Gilles and Jordan Myers improved to 4-2 on the season at the number one spot behind an 8-4 victory over sisters, Lindsey and Whitney Malin.  Miriam Waslewski and Estelle Withrow were paired together for the first time this year, at the number three spot, and came out victorious over Virginia Gerkin and Lenzie Kerchief, 8-0.  Sarah Marshall and Izzy Howell lost for only the second time in six matches paired at the number two spot, losing 8-4 to Lauryn Schnarr and Hailey Menke.

In singles action the Eagles needed only three wins to secure the victory, and got four.  Gilles and Myers each won at number one and number two singles while the bottom of the order also won two matches.  Gilles improved to 3-1 at the top spot.  The freshman is 6-3 overall after a 7-6(10), 6-0 defeat of Lindsey Malin.  Myers evens her record at 2-2 at number two and 4-4 overall with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Menke.

Morgan Amis and Kate Wenger were also winners in singles action, winning at the fifth and sixth positions.  Amis improves to 5-2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kerchief while Wenger defeated Gerkin 6-2, 6-1 to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday for their final home match of the season against Brescia University at 10 am.
