Tennis Selected for National Tournament
For the first time in school history the women’s tennis team will be playing for a national championship. On Wednesday Asbury was selected to participate in the NCCAA National Tournament in Mobile, Ala. running from May 9th-12th.
The Eagles finished the fall season with a 17-4 record and a second place finish in the KIAC with a 9-3 conference mark. Asbury has played two matches this spring, a loss to Campbellsville and a win over Indian East to push their overall record to 18-5, a school best for wins and winning percentage in a season.
“I am beyond proud of these girls,” first year head coach Jarred Miller said. “For these girls to go from 4-16 a year ago to 18-5 this season is truly phenomenal. They always work hard and listen to what we’re trying to teach them and that has been rewarded.”
The tournament will consist of eight teams broken into two pools of four. Asbury will play each team in their pool once and the top two teams from each pool will move into the semi-finals to be played on Wednesday. The championship match will be held on Thursday.
“These girls fight and fight hard and have earned this,” said Miller. “Regardless of the outcome I couldn’t be more proud of this group of girls; they have been the ones to earn this.”
The tournament will be played at Mobile Copeland-Cox Tennis Center which is home to 60 courts. As part of the NCCAA and their commitment to service, all teams competing in national championships participate in service projects in the host cities.
