Swimming Set to Host Asbury Invitational
WILMORE, Ky. – The Asbury men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will host their biggest meet of the season as they welcome in eight teams to the Asbury Invitational on Friday and Saturday December 3-4. The event will consist of three sessions beginning on Friday at 4:30 pm and two Saturday sessions at 9:00 am and 3:30 pm.
The invitational will consist of 40 events with 20 for men and 20 for women. The eight team field is made up of five NAIA schools and three NCAA D III schools. On the men’s side Asbury will be joined by Centre, Union (Ky.), Lindsey Wilson, Bethel (Tenn.), Sewanee, and Transylvania (divers only). The Eagles’ women will compete against Centre, Union (Ky.), Campbellsville, Bethel (Tenn.), Sewanee, and Transylvania (divers only).
For the sixth straight year Head Coach Dorothy Kempf will put on the invitational and expects this one to be more competitive than any other. “We are bringing in three teams on the men’s and women’s side that are very talented in Centre, Union, and Sewanee,” said Kempf.
Bethel is in their first year as a program and Lindsey Wilson is in only their second season of competition.
This invitational is what the team works towards during the fall semester. “This is a taper meet for us, so we lighten our training in the weeks leading up to the meet so we can swim our fastest times of the year. We expect several kids to make cuts for nationals during the meet,” said Kempf.
Asbury has already had 14 different swimmers qualify in at least one event for NAIA Nationals in March.
The Eagles will host three more meets this season, all coming in the spring semester as dual or double-dual events.
