Swimming host invite, set for Mission Trip

Wilmore, KY---The Asbury College swim team hosted the Asbury Invitational on Saturday December 6, bringing in Berea College, Campbellsville University, University of the South, and Union College.  The women's team won easily with a score of 1,002, and the men won with 839 points.  The Eagles won the combined scoring by almost 800 with a total score of 1,841.

The women's team won every relay during the meet (200, 400, 800 yard freestyles, and the 200 and 400 medley).  Their second team also finished 2nd in the 400 freestyle, and 3rd in the 400 medley.  The men's  team also found a lot of success in the relays winning three (200, 400, and 800 yard freestyle), placing 2nd in the 200 yard medley, and third in the 400 yard medley.

The women had 11 overall wins in individual races, eight second places and eight third places.  The men won six races, finished second five times and third eight times.  Senior Kelsey Perrine won three races (200 IM, 100 and 200 backstroke).  Hannah Amstutz won twice (200 and 500 freestyle) while Ali Hubach also won twice (50 and 100 freestyle), and so did Abigail Sterneman (100 and 200 breaststroke).  Matt Hood and Chris Lipka each won twice on the men's side, with Hood taking  the 200 and 500 freestyle, and Lipka the 200 and 400 IM.

The Eagles had five new swimmers qualify for nationals on Saturday bringing the overall total to 19.  Those who qualified Saturday were Katie Kaminski (100 breaststroke), Mary Peterson (200 backstroke), Ellen Worsham (100 freestyle), Lorna Phillips (1650 freestyle), and Brenna McKinnon (1650 freestyle).  

The NAIA National best times were released for the first time on December 2, and Asbury had 10 swimmers place in the top 20 in 30 events.  For a complete listing please click here.

Asbury swimming will take part in a mission trip again this year, traveling to Tennessee to work with Mountain T.O.P.  They will spend roughly two and a half  hours swimming in the morning at the University of the South, before working five to six hours with Mountain T.O.P. who is a rural life ministry in the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee.  For more information on Mountain T.O.P. please visit their site here.  For more information on Asbury's ministry outreach please contact Head Coach Dorothy Kempf.
