WILMORE, Ky. - Riley Smith proved to be a bright spot on the field for the Eagles (0-3) on Tuesday evening.
The freshman scored her second career goal in just her third game on the Eagles' squad in Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the no. 3-ranked Cougars of Spring Arbor University (1-1).
"Riley has been doing some good things for us so far this season," head coach Brooke Lincoln said. "We can't look passed what our other girls did out there tonight, though. Lizzie (Hoffa) was lights out in the goal in the first half. Meredith (Ury) played lights out in the second half and really created the goal opportunity for us.
"Maddye (Hahn) did a lot of great things in the center, and Sloane really played well in the back end," Lincoln added. "I'm proud of these girls-- the way we played tonight and the way we bounced back after the loss to Taylor-- there is a lot to be said for that."
Smith's goal came in the 56th minute after the Cougars had gone up 3-0 on goals from Shive, Linton, and Morgan.
Ury took a through ball, stayed onsides and raced toward the right post. Her shot, launched from just inside the 18, glanced off the left side post and directly to the foot of Smith for the easy put-back goal. Ury was credited with an assist on the play, her first of the season.
SAU added another goal from Samantha Sturgeon two minutes later in the 58th minute to get to the 4-1 final score.
Lizzie Hoffa started in goal for the Eagles and picked up a solid 12 saves despite being tagged with the loss. Sarah Yancer picked up the win and improved to 1-1 on the season.
The Eagles get 10 days off before they see the field again when they visit Harrogate, Tenn., to take on Lincoln Memorial University. Gametime is slated for 3 p.m.
