Women's Soccer Loses Heartbreaker in Double OT

Jenna BirdWILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – After taking a 1-0 lead early, Asbury women’s soccer fell 4-3 in double overtime to Cumberlands (Ky.) on Wednesday afternoon.  The Eagles finish the regular season at 4-11-1.  The KIAC Tournament will start on Saturday as Asbury hosts Midway.

Asbury took a 1-0 lead early on Wednesday as Jenna Bird scored off a cross from Samantha Chanda just 57 seconds into the match.  Just two minutes later Cumberlands got on the board as Michelle Bailey knocked home a pass from Kimberley Robinson.  Robinson gave the Patriots their first lead in the 15th minute at 2-1.

Just three minutes after halftime Bird was at it again, this time connecting off a pass from Cassie Holland for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.  The Patriots battled back to re-take the lead at 3-2 in the 68th minute before Heather Wantland tied it in the 75th with her second goal of the season.  The game eventually ended in the second overtime with 3:16 remaining as Ana Derrico headed home a corner kick for the game winner.

The Patriots took 22 shots in the game as Asbury managed only 11.  Jessica Batey made nine saves in goal for the Eagles.  Bird led all players with seven shots in the game including putting six on frame.

Asbury finishes the regular season at 4-11-1 and 3-3 in the KIAC.  The Eagles will be the four seed in the six-team KIAC Tournament and will host Midway, the five seed, on Saturday at 3 pm.  The winner will advance to the semi-finals and travel to Pittsburgh to play Carlow on Tuesday Nov. 6.
