Bird Soars Eagles Past Brescia
WILMORE, Ky. – Asbury women’s soccer wasted no time in jumping all over Brescia on Wednesday night as Heather Wantland netted the first goal of a 5-0 rout just 1:42 into the match. The Eagles finish KIAC play at 3-3 and will be the fourth seed in the KIAC Tournament.
Wantland’s strike came off a pass from Meredith Ury on the right side. Wantland fired a shot past keeper Mary Buckman for her first goal of the season. Jenna Bird added two goals before halftime to make the score 3-0 at the break. Bird now leads the team with five goals on the season.
The Eagles took 25 shots to Brescia’s three in the match. Asbury (3-10-1, 3-3 KIAC) had a 15-1 shot advantage in the second half. Kathryn Hale led the team with eight shots, but was not able to put one in the back of the net.
Despite not scoring a goal, Hale played a role in the final two. Samantha Chanda got in the act with her second goal of the season just two minutes into the second half, off a feed from Hale. Hale then was one of two assists in the final goal, the first career goal for Sara Menges. Jessica Batey also assisted on the goal.
Asbury will host Midway in the KIAC Tournament on November 3, game time has not been set yet. The Eagles will finish off their regular season home slate on Saturday at 12:30 pm as they host Cedarville during Homecoming. This will also be senior day as all five seniors will be honored before the match.
