Smith's First Goal Propels Eagles Past Scots
WILMORE, Ky. – The Eagles withstood a tough test from Covenant College, beating the Scots 2-1 in a closely contested game Saturday. Asbury’s game winning goal came from Freshman Bre Smith (Shelbyville, Ky.), the first of her career as an Eagle.
Asbury (3-2) opened the scoring in the 26th minute as Kaitlyn Hooper (Cleveland, Ga.) sent a cross to Andrea Hasik (Paragould, Ark.) who put it behind Covenant goaltender Hannah Bales to record her third goal of the season. Midway through the second half, Covenant’s Kara Lee beat Asbury’s Maegan Rogers (Fairfield, Ohio) to tie the game at one.
Asbury and Covenant would continue to trade opportunities as the game drew to a close, but with just ten minutes remaining in the game, Smith beat Covenant goaltender Lucy Johnson to convert what would stand as the game winning goal. Smith’s goal, the first of her career, comes in her fifth game as an Eagle.
“This is a very important win for us psychologically,” said Asbury Head Coach Paul Nesselroade, “When the game was tied 1-1, the momentum was clearly in the direction of the other team, but our girls stood up and changed the momentum. They forced out the win.”
For the day, Asbury recorded 14 shots with 8 making it on target. Maegan Rogers made three saves in net for the Eagles.
The Eagles will hit the road for their next game as they head to Campbellsville, Ky. on Wednesday, Sept. 14th to take on Campbellsville University at 7:00 p.m.
