Asbury's championship streak ends
BEREA, Ky. – The Eagles made the KIAC Women’s Soccer Championship game for the fifth straight year, but for the first time they didn’t walk away as the champions. Cincinnati Christian took the title after a 3-2 win over Asbury.
Asbury (7-13) never led in the match as CCU took an early lead 22nd minute as Valerie Maslyn netted the first goal. Asbury would come back to tie it two minutes later as Bethany Russell found the back of the net after a pass from Jessica Batey.
After halftime CCU would again take the lead and again Russell would provide the answer. But CCU would find the back of the net moments after the equalizer to take the title.
The Eagles had defeated CCU in the regular season 3-1 before their loss on Saturday afternoon. Asbury won the regular season title with a perfect 5-0 mark and are 19-1 in regular season conference games since 2006. The Eagles were riding a 15 game winning streak against KIAC members dating back to 2008 and a five game winning streak overall. This is the first time since 2004 Asbury will finish under .500 and less than 10 wins.
