Asbury Shutout 2-0

WILMORE, Ky. – The Eagles would have their chances to equalize but came up just short and Mount Vernon Nazarene pulled away with a late goal to win 2-0 on Friday night.  The loss drops Asbury to 2-9 while MVNU improves to 6-2.

Asbury had several chances in both halves to score but were unable to get a good shot off.  In the first half the Eagles used their only corner of the half to gain a good chance.  Aly Crawford’s cross found Kara Selle’s head in the middle of the box, but Selle was unable to turn the ball back towards the net.  Later in the half Rebecca Batey nearly stole a goal as MVNU’s keeper Janessa Loewen barely beat Batey to the ball 40 yards from the goal.  Batey was a half-step from beating Loewen and tying the game.

MVNU scored in the 39th minute as Heidi Moeckel got her head on a corner from Jessica Linger and beat Asbury keeper Maegan Rogers to the back post.  The score would stay that way until the Cougars added the final goal in the 82nd minute as Linger stole the back near midfield and beat Rogers on a 1-on-1 breakaway.

Neither team was able to get in a flow in the first half with Asbury getting only one shot and MVNU only 3.  MVNU was whistled for 11 offsides in the match, Asbury only one.  The Eagles finished with nine shots for the game, MVNU had 16.  Maegan Rogers made eight saves in goal for Asbury and Janessa Loewen only needed to make two.

Asbury will hit the road on Saturday October 9th as they head to Lookout Mountain, Georgia to take on Covenant College at 5:30 pm.
