Eagles Drop Opener to Spring Arbor
Wilmore, KY – Asbury’s 2010 campaign started the same way 2009 started, with a loss to Spring Arbor University. This time around the Lady Cougars scored three times in the shutout victory.
The Eagles started nine freshmen or sophomores and played three more, showing their youth throughout the match. Asbury (0-1) was only able to get off one shot while Spring Arbor maintained possession throughout with 23 shots. Maegan Rogers, who missed all of last year with an injury, made six saves before leaving mid-way through the second half after taking a shot to the head after a diving stop. Bethany Russell finished the game in goal.
Spring Arbor (1-1) grabbed an early lead with a goal in the fourth minute. Kristin Abbott knocked a corner inside the six-yard box that Ashley Denio headed into the net. Abbott would score the final goal on a breakaway in the second half. Megan Wegener added the second goal late in the first half after Chloe Maxwell crossed a ball into the box.
Asbury will host Taylor University on Saturday at 2:00 pm. The Eagles beat Taylor last year in Upland, Indiana 4-3.
