Wiley Scores 50th, Eagles Cruise
Wilmore, Ky. - Miranda Wiley scored three goals and passed the 50 career goal mark as the Asbury women's soccer team earned their first victory of the season, beating Bryan College 5-0 on Friday.
Asbury(1-3) was held in check by the Lions in the first half as the Eagles only got off six shots, Bryan took four first half shots.
After intermission the Eagles, and Wiley took over. In the 48th minute Wiley, a senior from Ontario, Canada, took a shot from outside the box that dipped over the keeper for her 50th career goal. She already was the all-time leader for goals scored but now becomes the first soccer player, man or woman to eclipse the 50 goal mark.
"She's a goal scorer plain and simple," Coach Paul Nesselroade said after the achievement. "She is an attacking player that I knew we needed to build this program. I wanted to be a program that didn't just sit back and absorb pressure from other teams, but rather show recruits that we could score and compete. Miranda has a nose for the net, a prolific scorer that truly has helped build the program to where it is."
Wiley added her second goal in the 62nd minute with a shot from outside the 18-yard line that deflected off the keeper and crossed the plane of the goal line. Her third goal of the night came only a minute after the second when she again struck the ball and place it perfectly in the lower corner.
"It's kind of overwhelming really," Wiley said after the game. "It's great for our program and I'm just really excited to see how we've grown. We have a lot of great young talent here now, it's really fun to look back and see where we came from to where we are now."
Freshmen Rebecca Batey added her second goal of the season in the 57th minute and fellow freshmen Kara Selle scored her first collegiate goal on a header in the 73rd minute off a corner from Jessica Batey.
The Eagles will host Bluefield College on Saturday September 5th at 4:00 pm.
